Tupac Shakur’s Music Gets Broadway Show
Tupac Shakur, legendary and celebrated American rapper, will posthumously join Broadway next year through song. The upcoming musical, Holler if Ya Hear Me, is based on an original and fictional story about two hopeful childhood friends in a Midwestern industrial city in the midst of their struggles and obstacles. Produced by Tupac Shakur’s mother, Afeni, the show will honor her son’s musical success and visionary hope.
Director Kenny Leon, of A Raisin in the Sun and Fences, told Broadway.com that “Tupac was a prophet and I want everyone to see that. [Holler if Ya Hear Me] is a present-day musical using all of Tupac’s music, but Tupac is not a character in the musical.”
Todd Kreidler wrote the musical’s book and Tony Award-winner Wayne Cilento, of Wicked and Sweet Charity, will choreograph. The cast and theater location are still unannounced.
