NYC Chef David Chang Wins Top James Beard Award

David Chang, the mastermind behind Manhattan’s Momofuku Noodle Bar, was one of two chefs honored by the James Beard Foundation on Monday.

“I grew up dreaming what it might be like to do this and how impossible it might be,” the 35-year-old culinary genius told NBC. “I’m really, truly honored.”

Chang shares the prestigious away with fellow esteemed chef, Paul Kahan. The two both operate Michelin-starred restaurants as well as casual eateries. “A tie could not have been better because I’m glad I’m not up here by myself,” Chang said graciously while accepting the award.

Chang has won three previous Beard awards, including best new restaurant for Momofuku Ko in 2009 and rising star chef in 2007.

“He has brought a modern approach to Asian cuisine,” explained Susan Ungaro, President of the James Beard Foundation, “that no one else has done before.”
