Cycling Fans: Ride for the Pass
The 12,095-foot Independence Pass closes to traffic from late October through Memorial Day Weekend because of snow. But there are a few weeks before it reopens during which bicyclists can take to the curvy road without battling cars. This weekend, the Ride for the Pass is one of them.
Climbing 2,500 feet in 10 miles, from the winter gate to the ghost town of Independence, the Ride for the Pass on Highway 82 is an annual benefit for the Independence Pass Foundation. It starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 18. The last two years, the event has been cancelled because of weather and organizers are hoping that this May Mother Nature will cooperate.
