‘Sopranos,’ ‘The Wire’ Screenwriters Take Aspen Shortsfest Stage

Television screenwriters arguably understand the art of writing a short film or show best–they do it every week with the intention of getting an audience to keep coming back. A group of award-winning writers will talk about this challenge and more at a panel called “Seriously: Writing Drama for Television” on Saturday during Aspen Film’s Shortsfest.

The panel includes Dana Barrata, a writer for the movie “Andre,” and TV shows “Dawson’s  Creek” and “Private Practice”; husband-and-wife team Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider, who started with “AlienNation” and went on to win awards for their writing on “The Sopranos” and “Northern Exposure”; and Eric Overmyer, who won Edgar and Writers Guild awards for “The Wire” and Peabodys for “Homicide” and “Treme.”
