Hal Prince, Legendary Director of ‘Phantom of the Opera,’ Lists UES Townhouse for $21 Million
“Phantom of the Opera” director Hal Prince has listed his Upper East Side property for a cool $21 million. Located at 48 E. 74th St, the six-story townhouse features three outdoor spaces, five bedrooms, a basement suite and a double-height living room.
“It has the flair of a downtown space in a perfect uptown location,” a broker told the New York Daily News. “A four-story interior atrium brings light from the parlor floor to the top-floor skylight.”
The 21-time Tony winner purchased the 20-foot wide house in 2009 for $12.5 million shortly after it was gut renovated by the previous owner. Prince then infused his own unique style on the place, plastering over a fireplace, painting zig-zags on the banisters, covering a wall of glass with heavy floor-to-ceiling draperies and installing bright red rugs — even astroturf.
