Haute 100 San Francisco Update: George Lucas Sells Star Wars Empire To Disney
To the surprise of many, George Lucas has called it quits creating new Star Wars. The genius behind the Star Wars empire has sold the rights to Lucas Films to the entertainment giant, Disney.
Disney has snapped up the Lucas empire for a cool $4.05 billion. Disney CEO Bob Iger and Lucas broke down the deal in a statement.
“In addition to getting the rights to one of the greatest family franchises and epic stories of all time, Disney is also acquiring all of Lucasfims operating business including Industrial Light and Magic and Skywalker Sound. The Star Wars universe now has more than 17,000 characters inhabiting several thousand planets, spanning twenty-thousand years. This gives Disney infinite inspiration and opportunities to continue the epic Star Wars saga.”
Though Disney is headquartered in Southern California, officials have stated that Lucas employees will stay put in the Presidio, where the 850,000-square-foot Letterman Digital Arts Center opened in 2005 and houses the corporate offices, along with Industrial Light and Magic and LucasArts.
