Alexander McQueen Launches Women’s Store in Shanghai
Alexander McQueen is making its second venture into China with the opening of a womens wear store in Shanghai following the opening of the inaugural Beijing Sanlitun boutique.
Created by architecture and interior design agency David Collins Studio, the 1,600-square-foot space in Shanghai will offer a complete range of Alexander McQueen items including ready-to-wear, accessories (including footwear, bags and scarves) and runway pieces.
The opening of the Shanghai store was done under the direction of chief designer Sarah Burton, who has taken the held of the luxury fashion house since Alexander McQueen passed away in February 2010. She has reinvigorated the label and guided the brand in new directions.
Prior to the Bejing opening PPR chief executive and chairman Francois-Henri Pinault told the Times last year, “The death of Alexander McQueen and the appointment of Sarah Burton as chief designer has changed the scale of Alexander McQueen’s potential…That is why we have taken the decision to open more stores. Because the vision that she is bringing, I think it can now reach more people than we imagined was possible through the store network.”
The new store in Shanghai “embodies McQueen while celebrating the female form.”
According to Burton, “It’s very McQueen to see something from a distance and think it’s one thing and then to look up close and discover something else. It’s important to us that everything in the store feels very precious.”
Collins added that the store is “about McQueen as a point of view, the idea of making a dress out of razor clam shells or sheaves of corn, the manipulation of nature to make ornament. We were thinking about eroticism and sexuality. Everything is exaggerated and very slightly distorted.”
The Alexander McQueen Shanghai is located at Réel Mall, Unit 110, 1st Floor, 1601 Nanjing Road West, Shanghai 200040.
