Prime Minister of Qatar Reportedly Spends $250 Million On One57 Apartments

News | July 2, 2012

We recently wrote about the record-breaking $92 million sale of a duplex penthouse condo at the under-construction One57. Now the Post has learned that the buyer is Sheik Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber al-Thani, the Prime Minister of Qatar, and that he’s in talks to buy four additional units in the building, bringing his spending spree in the 90-story highrise to a cool quarter-billion dollars. The PM had lobbied for a $31.5 million co-op in the 5th Avenue building previously occupied by reclusive socialite Huguette Clark. That board, and a handful of other uptown co-ops, denied his application, perhaps on the account of his sprawling family (two wives, 15 children) and massive security detail. (Maybe the bodyguards will occupy the four non-penthouse apartments?) The Post also notes that the sheik’s diplomatic immunity, which would make it difficult for any board to collect unpaid dues, also influenced his decision to go condo.
