Mesmerized by Matteo

News | June 8, 2012

Earlier this year, I stayed at the Colony Palms Hotel in Palm Springs. The hotel is beautifully decorated (famously by Martyn Lawrence Bullard on Bravo’s Million Dollar Decorators) but it was the bedding that I appreciated most. Suffering from insomnia, I melted into the luxurious, yet understated, linens. I’ve rarely experienced that level of comfort so I had to ask about them at checkout. That’s the first time I learned of Matteo. Since then, I’ve been on a one-woman mission to envelop my bed in their linens because, quite simply, I want my bed to be as fantastic as vacation.

Founded in 1996 by Matthew Lenoci, Matteo’s mission is to create simple sheets from the most luxurious textiles in the world that appeal to men, women and kids.  Their sheeting is woven and finished to the same standards of fine men’s shirts and their yarns are from the finest natural fibers—Egyptian cotton, Peruvian alpaca, flax, Nepalese cashmere. Spanning two continents, fabric is woven at the leading fabric mills in Italy and cut, sewn, dyed, packed and shipped in their Downtown Los Angeles headquarters. This is just part of the reason why top interior designers and hotels rely on Matteo.

Because Matteo fills the niche of ultra-high quality, minimal detail and unisex appeal, while clinging to a classic, vintage aesthetic, the pieces can be mixed and matched to look as casual or as formal as you like. On my bed, I have the Nap sheets (smooth), the Channel quilt (stitched stripes), Vintage Linen bed panel (linen), Fill Matelasse shams (floral texture) and Bellows throw. While this sounds like a mess of different styles, it actually comes together quite chicly. The texture adds an element of surprise and depth.

I’ve gone on and on about the bedding, but they also have bath towels and mats, tablecloths, napkins, beach blankets, robes and apparel.  Future plans include an expansion into apparel and delving further into hospitality and private label.

The full range of the Matteo collection can be found at their flagship store within ABC Carpet & Home in New York, their showroom in Los Angeles and on their website.
