Long-Dormant Nightclub Pink Elephant Reopening in New Location This Week
Pink Elephant, once among the many nightspots crammed onto West 27th’s “Club Row,” is coming back to a new location removed from the Meatpacking District-Chelsea party zone. Owners David Sarner and Robert Montwaid will christen the venue later this week at its home on 40 West 8th St. in Greenwich Village. That address formerly housed Love, a quirky dance spot respected in underground house and techno circles for its quality soundsystem and tendency to stay open well past 4 a.m.
Sarner and Montwaid tell Eater that the new space is much smaller than the cavernous Chelsea digs, with room for just 200 people and 20 bottle service tables. However, they’ve added features like a cabaret lounge and embraced the quality cocktail trend more common to retro bars than dance halls. The diminished capacity translates to a tougher door, but with any luck there won’t be too much sidewalk spillover to irk the neighbors in this thoroughly residential ‘hood.
