L’Wren Scott the person is quite the embodiment of L’Wren Scott the brand. At 6’3” in flats, with long, dark hair draped over her lithe, willowy frame, she cuts a striking figure even without her longtime companion Mick Jagger on her arm. That she happens to design exquisite, expensive clothing for like-minded (and like-bodied) spirits is one thing; that she is gracious, thoughtful, and genuinely involved in the enterprise is downright maddening. Mick’s girlfriend is the Salt of the Earth? She does the Dirty Work? Some Girls!
To introduce this tall drink of champagne and her Fall Collection to the stylish set, Vanessa Getty hosted a luncheon on the fourth floor of Barney’s New York in Union Square. Surrounded by groomed boxwood hedges, four tables adorned with perfectly pink peonies welcomed the guests sitting down to Taste catering’s decadent lobster salad, followed by a delectable pairing of pear sorbet with roasted pears and genoise. The trunk show temptation of fall 2011 and spring 2012 collections were thoughtfully arrayed nearby, as were the designer’s new collection of covetable handbags in leather and crocodile, adorned with gunmetal grey hardware designed to complement both gold and silver jewelry. Scott’s style is sexy schoolmarm, with curve-defining cutting and seaming embedded in prim, day-to-night styles which could be considered Mother’s Little Helper of a surprise seduction. Her sensibility remains constant beyond a particular season; her variation of color or material continues within the vernacular of line that she establishes and reinforces As Tears Go By. Nicole Kidman, Michelle Obama, Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks, and Madonna all recognize Scott’s ability to create a seemingly simple shift dress that strikes the right balance between Vatican and Va-va-voom – in fact, her best-selling silhouette is called the “Headmistress.” Although precious few faculty members are going to be able to check out her look-books from the library —You Can’t Always Get What You Want–Scott’s dresses write the book on sophisticated, subtle sexiness for students of style.
That sophistication was not lost on hostess Vanessa Getty, who could be a fit model for the sinuous Scott silhouette. Getty made sure to introduce everyone in the room, noting something about their signature style in her introduction to Shine a Light on the person. If guests had No Expectations, Scott’s Midwestern manners and focused attention were a charming surprise, her experience as a runway model and later an LA stylist enabling her to identify which dress would be best for each of her new besties which included Connie Nielsen, Stephanie Coyote, Alexis Swanson Traina, Gina Pell, Christine Suppes, OJ Shansby, Sobia Shaikh, Gina Pell, Victoire Reynal, Charlot Malin, Maca Huneeus, Angelique Griepp, Sabrina Buell, Katie Traina, almost-as-tall Christine Suppes, Ali Speer, and a spectacular selection of San Francisco’s sleekest and chicest, who got plenty of Satisfaction from seeing and being seen with the Dangerous Beauty of L’Wren Scott.
