Epicurean Management Company, the group behind L’Artusi, Anfora, and most notably, the always-crowed Dell’Anima, opened Ellabess restaurant in the not-yet-open NoLitan Hotel on Monday. It will replace J&S Food Hall, the restaurant Jimmy Bradley (The Red Cat and The Harrison) planned to open before his battle with oral cancer forced him to abandon the project. Chef Troy Unruh, Dell’Anima’s chef de cuisine who recently worked at Zylo at the W in Hoboken and for two years at Del Posto, created a menu of seasonal American dishes comprised of simple ingredients that boast bold flavor.

Menu items range from a Grilled Sweetbreads appetizer with a cherry glaze, fava beans and marcona almonds, to a Fried Chicken Breast entrée with pickled watermelon rind, peanuts and basil. The large room’s sleek black tables and concrete pillars give the eatery an industrial atmosphere that blends seamlessly with that of surrounding neighborhood, which is visible through floor-to-celing windows that enclose the restaurant on all sides.
Ellabess is open starting at 5:30 PM seven nights a week, with lunch and brunch to come.
153 Elizabeth St. in the NoLitan Hotel
