New York Fashion Week: Buckler Fall 2011 Show Shuts Down Grand Street
The streets of New York City has been heralded as one of the most sensational, not only because of the stylish denizens that walk them, but because of it’s architecture and rather rustic/organic vibe it transcends especially in images.
Andrew Buckler decided to take full advantage of the streets of New York by bringing his runway show to the pavements. He shut down Grand Street and gallantly presented his Fall 2011 collection to editors, bloggers, buyers, and other fashion writers right in front of Buckler’s store located at 93 Grand Street in SoHo. Yes, it was freezing!
The Buckler Fall 2011 collection was inspired by street art, particularly a painting of a dripping McDonald’s sign (see here). Self described as “English Bloke meets New York,” the collection featured classic, tailored pieces with a modern edge. Although the collection was mostly on the dark side and very utilitarian in nature, there were bright yellow pants and a raincoat that popped-up and made up for the lack of color.
Most looks featured slimming silhouettes and the pieces were purposely created for layering and accenting. Chunky knits, parkas, overalls, and sports jackets–were the common garments.
Street presentations and runway shows became popular in NYC during the Resort/Spring 2011 season. Cynthia Rowley had gathered all her models in a big black truck and stationed themselves right in the middle of midtown to showcase her resort collection to editors, bloggers and passersby. Vogue created and Lincoln Center played host to the world’s largest runway show during last year’s Fashion’s Night Out, which took place right in the middle of the streets. I think this is a trend here to stay.
