Memovox Tribute to Deep Sea: Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Tribute to the Legend of Diver’s Watches
A tribute is a gift wrapped in gratitude, an offering on behalf of something or someone’s esteemed effects. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s faithful interpretation of two previous diver’s watches by Memovox — the Tribute to Polaris 1965 and the Tribute to Polaris 1968 — is now succeeded by the respectful recreation of the 1959 Memovox Deep Sea, the legendary diving watch that has been reborn under Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Memovox Tribute to Deep Sea.
The Memovox Tribute to Deep Sea signifies the ethics of ambition, specifically those blossoming in the early 1950s. The unknown, alluring as ever, was progressively put closer and closer within reach as humanity was fit with the artfully crafted tools of discovery. “The Silent World,” filmed by the legendary Jacques-Yves Cousteau, brought public popularity to the mysterious world of underwater life. Quite suddenly, the disciplined and exclusive act of scuba diving became a popular American sport.
In 1959, Jaeger-LeCoultre invested their timepiece expertise in the development of a diver’s watch. Because of the sport’s novelty, no rigid specifications lay waiting for the developers of its essential tools. In parallel, the sport’s novelty required consummate attention to detail–the complete accountability of a Manufacture’s product placement. The result of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s engineering was the Memovox Deep Sea, equipped with their original, one-of-a-kind acoustic signal alarm function. Appropriate to the enduring values of Jaeger-LeCoultre, functionality was dedicated to serving security.
Inspired by the Atlantic market for diving watches in the 1950s, split between Europe and North America, the Memovox Tribute to Deep Sea is available in two limited series: 959 reproducing the “Jaeger-LeCoultre Classique 1959” (European market), and 359 inspired by the “LeCoultre Spécial Amérique 1959.” In relentless homage to these examples of the company’s legacy, the watchmakers of Jaeger-LeCoultre have protected the dial of the Memovox Tribute to Deep Sea with a Plexiglas watch glass, exactly equivalent to that which equipped the historical models.
