The 129th Boston Marathon returns on Monday, April 21, transforming the city into a vibrant celebration of endurance, spirit, and tradition. Inspired by the marathon event at the 1896 Olympic Games in Athens, the Boston Marathon is the world’s oldest annual marathon and has been held every year since 1897, making it the longest-running marathon in the world.

Every year, four gold olive wreaths cut from trees in Marathon, Greece are presented to the Boston Athletic Association by the Consul General of Greece in Boston, with support from the Alpha Omega Council and the 26.2 Foundation. The olive wreaths represent timeless ideals—freedom, dignity, and democracy—dating back over 2,500 years to the Battle of Marathon and the Ancient Olympic Games. These symbolic wreaths will be used to crown the winners of the 129th Boston Marathon.

“The opening of the 129th Boston Marathon is more than just a race—it is a powerful symbol of unity between Greece and Boston, between the Old and New Worlds. The spirit of the marathon, rooted in human endurance and belief in the impossible, resonates across centuries. Just as ancient Greeks believed in freedom and possibility, so too did the early Americans 250 years ago. This unbreakable bond is reflected in the symbolic wreaths—crafted from olive branches in Marathon, Greece—given as a gift to Boston. The olive wreath represents not just victory, but the enduring values of dignity, democracy, and resilience. It’s not the gold on the outside that matters most, but the meaning within.”—Symeon Tegos, Consul General of Greece in Boston

Whether you’re running, spectating, or simply soaking in the electric energy, Boston rolls out all the stops with its packages and wellness pop-ups at five-star hotels, Marathon-themed menus at fine-dining restaurants, and exclusive spa and recovery experiences to mark this memorable race.
