Matthew Malin and Andrew Goetz were ahead of their time. The founders of luxe skincare line Malin+Goetz, partners in life and business, set out to create a clean skincare line with eye-catching branding 15 years ago. Now as seemingly everyone from Olivia Wilde to Neiman Marcus jumps on the wellness and beautifully-branded bandwagon, Malin+Goetz have proven themselves as pioneers of the industry. “We like to believe we were ahead of a few trends, and it’s kind of nice that the industry is catching up,” Malin recently told Haute Living at the opening of his new Hayes Valley storefront. “I don’t think that we created clean beauty by any means, but certainly, we were thinking about it 15 years ago. I think it’s exciting that people are paying more attention to their skincare.”

The duo was merely searching for a product that they could both use. When they couldn’t find it, they decided to create it themselves. “It was combining our two respective careers and industries—design and beauty. Fusing those two worlds,” Goetz says. “The brand was predicated on skincare. It started with our skincare in mind and how we, as a couple, could shop for and use products together. I have rosacea, so everything was developed for sensitive skin. Now we have five categories of products.”

Malin+Goetz makes face items like cleansers and moisturizers, body products such as scrubs and deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, and more for hair, plus fragrance, and candles. Besides being gender neutral, the products are American-made in New York, so they have a limited carbon footprint and are cruelty-free.

All of their collections can found at the minimal boutique on Hayes Street. Malin+Goetz has ten stand-alone stores across the globe, and the San Francisco location makes the total 11. The couple always wanted to open in SF, but it took them a while to find the ideal storefront. They looked at eight different places over the past ten years before deciding that Hayes Valley was the perfect spot for Malin+Goetz.

Friends of the couple designed the space. Brooklyn-based Andy Bernheimer did the sparse decor that lets the products speak for themselves while David Weeks crafted the unusual light fixture. It’s a chic little shop that meets all your beauty needs. “We’re very excited to be in San Francisco, finally, with our shop,” Malin says. “Which is doing better than we expected.”
