With new hotels like the Proper and VIA opening up in San Francisco, older traditional places have to come up with innovative ways to stay relevant. One way to get all eyes on you? A stunning multimillion dollar renovation. Such is the case with the Galleria Park Hotel, a boutique gem, that recently completed a remodel. Located in heart of the Financial District on Sutter Street, the Galleria Park Hotel is a Joie de Vivre property. All 177 guest rooms, including eight suites, meeting and event spaces were completely redesigned by the luxe interior design firm Bamo. The entrance, lobby, and mezzanine were also given a modern refresh. The resulting hotel is inviting, luxurious, clean, and contemporary.

The building, which is an architectural landmark, was once the home of two glamorous West Coast establishments—The Occidental Hotel and Lick House—in the late 1800s. Rumor has it the Martini cocktail was first crafted at one of these two spots. However, both of these properties were destroyed during the 1906 earthquake and it was rebuilt and reopened as The Hotel Sutter in 1911. During the 1920s, the location was home to a popular speakeasy. Remnants of this storied past can be found in the current hotel’s parking garage. The Bamo team was inspired by its rich yesteryear and incorporated historic elements throughout the design.

The new entryway opens into a large two-story lobby area that is cozy and home-like, but also spacious and elegant. There is marble tile flooring, soft cream walls, colorful abstract artwork, plush furnishings, and vintage mirrors. The mezzanine serves as a meeting point for guests and is the location of the hotel’s new Martini Hour. “Over the years, our guests have expressed a desire for a casual common area where they can enjoy cocktails,” general manager Suzie Yang said in a statement. “We saw this renovation as the perfect opportunity to create a new experience out of the existing mezzanine, offering our guests the freedom to enjoy the vibrancy of the lobby from a contemporary and intimate space.” Each afternoon guests are invited to enjoy cocktails and bites from the hotel’s restaurant, Gaspar Brasserie.

As for the updated guest rooms, Bamo styled them in a palette of fresh neutrals with bright accents. Furnishing include marble-topped desks, antique mirrored surfaces, printed wallpaper, and sleek headboards.
