Piotr Uklanski: ESL at Bass Museum of Art
Borrowing the acronym for English as a Second Language, Polish artist Piotr Uklanski will be the museum’s big solo show opening December 5. ESL is referring both to Uklanski’s status as a Polish immigrant who hasn’t quite assimilated and the second language that is abstract painting for the classically trained artist. “Neither English nor abstraction is my mother tongue. These paintings ‘speak’ an aesthetic ESL,” explains the artist of the show’s concept. Running through March 16, 2014.

Ladurée
Ladurée, everyone’s favorite Parisian patisserie, famous for their gourmet macarons, will be opening a location on Lincoln Road this December just in time for Miami Art Week. To honor the occasion, they have created Ginger-infused Whipped Cream flavored macarons in a beautiful box by artist Will Cotton, whose paintings often feature landscapes made up entirely of pastries. Their historic Champs location will have to stay green with envy, as the first ever artist-Ladurée collaboration will only be available at the Miami Beach shop.

Hugo-Franc

Hugo França
This special exhibition opening December 1st features Hugo França’s work, which is a medium that should be right at home in the Fairchild Tropical Gardens – salvaged wood from old growth trees.  The wood has been cut down by “irresponsible acts of human beings” and can get another life as tables, trunks and benches under França’s tools. The artist finds his medium by scouting locations near Trancosa,  Bahia relying on help from the local loggers and even the Pataxo Indians to find wood left behind by deforestation. On view through May 31st.
