Michelle Williams of Destiny Child’s Reveals Battle with Depression
To an outsider, Michelle Williams has a pretty perfect life. She’s releasing a new single with Destiny’s Child later this month, performing during the half-time show at the Super Bowl and starring in a national tour of a Broadway musical. But in reality, the 32-year-old musician had trouble simply out of bed.
“I’ve dealt with depression,” Williams told the Associate Press during a break in rehearsals for her play “Fela!” that kicks off later this month. Williams said began battling depression since the age of 15 or 16, but resisted taking medication. “We’re taught, ‘Just go to church and pray about it. The Lord is going to heal you,'” she revealed.
When that didn’t work, Williams turned to exercise, therapy and positive thinking. “I believe God-gifted people, physicians, doctors, therapists – that’s your healing. Take advantage of it,” she said. “Go see a professional so that they can assess you. It’s OK if you’re going through something. Depression is not OK, but it is OK to go get help.”
