As Miami’s art scene begins to quiet down, visitors and celebrities head home following this year’s Art Basel week and Haute Living looks back at some of the best events and memorable moments.
On Art Basel’s Thursday night, Krug Champagne hosted a private celebrity dinner at the new Gale hotel on Collins Avenue with actor-filmmaker Adrian Grenier and film producer Peter Glatzer, co-founders of SHFT.com. The evening also included a silent auction of Sam Haskins photographs benefiting the SHFT Mobile Kitchen Classroom. Twenty guests were in attendance, including Sarah Arison, Nevena Borissova, Kana Manglapus and R. Adam Smith. SHFT Mobile Classroom is a new “nonprofit organization that provides high school students with the opportunity to learn about food politics, food justice, nutrition and to teach basic cooking skills to prepare healthy, affordable, and delicious meals.”

On December 8, famed Chinese artist Simon Ma hosted a private reception at Soho Beach House on the 8th floor rooftop at OCHO lounge. Packed with VIPs, guests included Julian Lennon, Alto Reed, Johnny Turchin, Alarra Hewstan, Peter Bodnarchuk and Brekelle Lavee Long. A painting created by Simon Ma was up for auction to benefit YoungArts and The Make A Wish Foundation. Ma exhibited portions of “The Soul” collection during Art Basel.
Gary Nader debuted “Masterpieces from the Berardo Collection” to a diverse crowd of prestigious art collectors, critics, artist, curators and art lovers, among others. The museum-quality exhibit was valued at over $500 million and included works from Joe Berardo’s private art collection. At the debut, City of Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado honored Joe Berardo with the Keys to the City for his contributions and for sharing his art collection. The exhbit will remain open to the public through March 30, 2013.
The James Royal Palm and Florida Cookery hosted Wallpaper* magazine’s artist’s palate series, an edible experience showcasing artists’ recipes and visual interpretations of selected dishes. Notable guests included Tony Chambers, Jorge and Darlene Perez, Spike Mendelsohn, John Turchin, Thomas Aastad, Carli Hermes, Lauren Rottet and Klaus Moeller. Previousl Artist’s Palate contributors’ recipes were served and recreated by Kriss Wessell of Florida Cookery, The James Royal Palm’s signature restaurant.
The James Royal Palm hotel also hosted the official Art Basel Miami Beach closing part, with over 1,000 VIPs, collectors, gallerists, artists and influencers. The evening included champagne provided by Ruinart Champagne and cocktails provided by Absolut Vodka. Bites were provided by the hotel’s signature restaurant, Florida Cookery and celebrity sightings included Jesse Williams, Eva & Adele.
