Luxury Building One57’s Crane Secured in New York City

In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, New Yorkers are slowly beginning to experience some resemblance of normalcy as power sporadically gets restored and a massive crane in front of luxury building One57 gets secured, allowing residents in the area to safely return to their homes.

According to NY Curbed, the Department of Buildings announced on Saturday evening that the crane has now been secured and the streets have reopened allowing evacuated residents to return home. Though it could still be some time before the damaged crane is removed, it was successfully secured using a crane plan that construction workers laid out on Friday.

The Wall Street Journal outlined the securing process and said, “construction workers used a hand crank to turn the entire cab and crane platform about 70 degrees counter-clockwise, maneuvering the boom below until it was tucked close to the southern wall of the building.” Yesterday, workers were able to lock the boom in place by “inserting three pair of steel beams that were anchored back into the building.”

A new crane will have to be built in order to remove the damaged one, which could significantly delay the building of New York City’s new luxury building, One57, which was designed by Pritzker-prize winning architect Christian de Portzamparc. In addition to housing luxury private residences, the building will also be home to the Park Hyatt’s new five-star flagship property.
