Julien’s Auction Hollywood Legends Sale

Some of the most expensive movie memorabilia was sold at Julien’s Auction Hollywood Legends sale in Beverly Hills. Featuring items associated with icons like Charlie Chaplin, Whitney Houston and Marilyn Monroe, the auction had 927 high-profile items.

The Julien’s Auction Hollywood Legends auction, which took place on March 31, featured 927 items associated with numerous high-profile celebrities. Included in the lot was a black and white wool herringbone jacket by Eddie Schmidt, Inc. with a tag inscribed “Clark Gable” from “Gone with the Wind” that sold for $57,600.

A Bowler Hat worn by Charlie Chaplin also sold for $57,600. The black hat has a black fine grosgrain ribbon, brown leather headband and an “M” inscription in black marker pen. Prior to the winning bidder taking the hat home, it will be displayed at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in January 2013. Charlie Chaplin’s 35 inch metal-tipped bamboo cane was also auctioned off at the event, which will also go on display in London.

Whitney Houston’s stage-worn bustier featuring elaborate beading, rhinestones and pearls sold for $19,200. The buyer also received a photograph of Whitney wearing the bustier on stage.

Superman fans were pleasantly surprised to find a special effects flying costume worn by Christopher Reeve in Superman IV at the auction. Sold for $35,200, the costume is actually a multi-piece body suit with a stylized Superman logo sewn in the front and an embroidered Bermans and Bathans customer tag reading “Christopher Reeve 4193 Flying Superman IV”. The buyer also received a pair of matching knit tights, a calf-length red cape, a copy of the film and red trunks with added belt loops.

Traditionally fetching enormous amounts at auction, Marilyn Monroe memorabilia is always popular at celebrity memorabilia auctions. At this particular auction, “River of No Return” pantaloons were sold for $44,800. Worn by Monroe in her role as Kay Weston in “River of No Return”, the cream-colored cotton pantaloons are accented with lace trim, metal snaps and drawstring closure at the waist. They are accompanied by a handwritten letter dated November 2, 2006 from costume designer Jane Hudson and a picture of Monroe wearing them.
