Punk is Not Dead at Morono Kiang Gallery

Fans of Wasted Youth, Black Flag and the Dead Kennedys rejoice, the Morono Kiang Gallery in downtown L.A. has a new gallery, which highlights the ‘80s punk rock scene in the City of Angels.
“Faraway, So Close: Photographs of Los Angeles in the ‘80s” features works from photographers such as Sara Jane Boyers, Ann Summa and Edward Colver. Colver’s punk pictures have been featured on more than 250 album covers for artists such as Circle Jerks, Bad Religion and Agent Orange. One of his photos on display is “Punk Graverobbers,” an image capturing three combat-boot-wearing guys un-digging a grave with an upside down wooden cross behind them.
Another artist famed for her punk rock photography and on display is Ann Summa. The LA photographer has taken her share of punk photos, especially of iconic punk rockers such as Johnny Rotten, Henry Rollins, David Byrne-not very punk rock but nonetheless iconic- and Joe Strummer. Her display at the exhibit, however, will focus more on ‘80s life instead of strictly punk rock.
Other artists on display aren’t as punk minded as Colver and Summa, Willie Robert Middlebrook will display large prints of Bob Marley on a 1981 visit to Watts, while photographers such as Mark Vallens and Shervin Shahbazi take on more politically fueled images.
