Joan Rivers: If She Can’t Sell It, She’ll Just Raise the Price!

News | January 16, 2012

In May 2009, trash-talking comedienne Joan Rivers placed her mansion-sized New York City triplex penthouse on the market with the beefy asking price of $25 million. Nobody is quite sure when Rivers took her luxurious penthouse home off the market, but the feisty senior recently pushed the 5,190-square-foot townhouse building on East 62nd Street back on the market with a slightly higher asking price of $29.5 million, and this time the listing includes a floor plan for all of us to drool over.

The three-floor penthouse features four bedrooms, four-and-a-half bathrooms, two staircases, two mezzanine balconies, more than twenty closets including a cedar walk-in and another just for the dishes, five fireplaces and two windowed kitchens. It also features a planted terrace with Central Park views, a double height entrance hall that is larger than most Manhattan studio apartments, an 800-plus square-foot-formal living room with twenty-three-foot ceiling, and a formal dining room. It’s amazing what a couple of jokes can get you.

Since the penthouse is a condominium as opposed to a co-operative, the buyer does not have to worry about impressing a finicky co-op board and the building allows a minimum 10% down payment. Maintenance, common expenses and taxes add up to a significant $20,100 per month, which means it takes a quarter million a year for Rivers to pay the basics. With these sort of expenses, no wonder she wants to get rid of this place.
