Novaya Opera’s Epiphany Week Festival in Memory of Theater’s Founder

To honor the memory of the theater’s founder, Yevgeny Kolobov, the Novaya Opera’s Epiphany Week festival will run from January 11 through January 29.

This is the eighth consecutive year the festival has taken place and the schedule includes an impressive line up of seven complete operas; Jules Massenet’s “Thais,” Giuseppe Verdi’s “I Lombardi alla prima crociata” (“The Lombards on the First Crusades”), Modest Mussorgsky’s “Khovanshchina”, “La Cenerentola” (“Cinderella”), “The Barber of Seville” of Gioacchino Rossini, Alexander Borodin’s “Prince Igor” and Verdi’s “La Traviata”.

Four of the operas will be fully staged, including “The Barber of Seville” on January 29, which is said to be the “prize of the lot” because of the comical and gimmick-free staging provided by British director Elijah Moshinsky. For the festival, Novaya Opera is bringing in three Italian guest performers, including mezzo-soprano Daniela Barcellona.

Kolobov’s birthday, January 19 is always commemorated with a special evening of performances including some with Kolobov’s own piano transcriptions.
