John Lennon Fans Fill Strawberry Fields to Mark 31st Anniversary of His Death

News | December 12, 2011

To mark the 31st anniversary of legendary singer John Lennon, hundreds of fans gathered in Strawberry Fields to pay their respects.

John Lennon was shot dead outside his home at the Dakota 31 years ago. In Lennon’s final hours, he and Yoko Ono were returning from the recording studio to their home on 72nd street. Ono said, “Shall we go to a restaurant before we go home?” and Lennon reportedly said no because he wanted to see his son, Sean, before he went to sleep. As Ono responded “He’s probably asleep by now,” the car stopped, they got out and Lennon was shot outside the building.

To coincide with the 31st anniversary, Ono has asked that people put their Lennon tributes on a website dedicated to “imagine peace” and Lennon.

Lennon was murdered on December 9, 1980.
