Haute 100 Update: Tommy Hilfiger, the Obamas, More Dedicate new MLK Jr. Memorial [PHOTOS]
Renowned fashion figure Tommy Hilfiger was present over this past weekend for the dedication the new Martin Luther King Jr. memorial at the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Hilfiger’s charity organization, the Tommy Hilfiger Corporate Foundation, co-chaired the ceremonies that took place on Saturday, Oct. 15 and Sunday, Oct. 16.
“The memorial dedication was a momentous occasion. To see the memorial built and celebrated is a remarkable milestone for all those who continue to advocate Dr. King’s universal message of humanity and equality,” said Hilfiger. “Our company has had the exceptional opportunity to work with the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation for over ten years; it is a privilege and a responsibility that we take great pride in.”
The event began on Saturday with the Dream Reception and Gala held at the Hilton Hotel. On Sunday, the official dedication ceremony took place at the memorial in front of 50,000 people. Several speeches were made, including Hilfiger’s, as well as remarks by President Obama, who attended the event with his family.
Guests were also treated to incredible live performances by Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Sheryl Crow, Ledisi, and James Taylor.
Hilfiger donated custom baseball caps embellished with artwork inspired by the memorial’s logo to all the guests of the event. Additionally, 1,500 event volunteers were also provided custom polo shirts bearing the logo.
