Soft Opening for Taavo Somer’s Latest Restaurant, Isa

Known for New York downtown hot spots Peels and Freemans, Taavo Somer just soft opened his latest restaurant, Isa, in Williamsburg.

The indie restaurateur teamed up with Il Buco’s former executive chef, Ignacio Mattos, to create Isa, which means “father” in Estonian. It is reported that the duo chose this name because they both became fathers within 45 minutes of one another.

Somer and Mattos describe Isa’s design and cuisine as “modern primitive” and the menu will feature items such as sardine filets served with their friend skeletons and a Treviso sales with a vegan nut dressing.

Last week Isa, which has seating for 40, soft opened and diners finally got to experience the rustic space, complete with wood touches, exposed brick, tile floors, doors that open onto the street and an open kitchen.

Isa will officially open at the end of August. If you can’t wait, they are doing dinner service on Tuesday-Saturday from 6 p.m. – 11 p.m. with a “developing” menu. Isa is a cash-only restaurant and as of last week they are still waiting for their liquor license.
