Making Geek Chic: The Big Bang Theory
Like Weezer did in the ’90s, CBS’s hit show “The Big Bang Theory” has upped the cool factor of geeks everywhere making their unique style the new chic.
For those of you who haven’t seen the show, it is centered around two roommates who are geniuses attending Cal Tech — experimental physicist Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki) and theoretical physicist Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons).
The ensemble cast includes their neighbor Penny (Kaley Cuoco) — a hot blonde waitress and aspiring actress (Leonard’s on again off again love interest); and Leonard and Sheldon’s equally geeky and socially awkward co-workers and friends Howard Wolowitz (Simon Helberg) who still lives with his mom, and Rajesh Koothrappali (Kunal Nayyar) who has a fear of talking to women and can only do so when drunk.
Hilarity ensues.
The show delivers weekly treats of brilliant writing, humor, and winks and nods to some coveted geek interests such as “Star Trek” (many guest appearances from Wil Wheaton), comic books, “Doctor Who,” “World of Warcraft” and navigating social awkwardness.
Whether you’re a geek or geek at heart, you can’t help but love the interesting, eclectic, hipster, nerdy and sometimes retro clothing and gear the gang sports on every episode. Each character definitely has his own take on geek.
Sheldon wears graphic and comic book tee’s layered with long sleeve shirts, Leonard frequently don’s corduroy pants, windbreakers and earth toned hoodies with his classic “Buddy Holly” style glasses, Wolowitz has a retro-nerd look all his own and Koothrappali seems to have the largest selection of sweater vests I’ve ever seen.
You may not be a MENSA member, have a degree in science or attend Comicon but you can still put some nerd smarts to work and add some Geek chic to your wardrobe repertoire.
