Early Entry for Haute 100, United Kingdom: Michael Caine Voted Favorite Londoner

There’s an old joke that asks, ‘When is an actor not an actor?’ The answer is: most of the time. Michael Caine, however, seems to be the exception to the rule, because it seems like he’s ALWAYS working. He’s been in more than one hundred films, from studs to duds, including: Zulu, Alfie, Educating Rita, Blame it on Rio, Hannah & Her Sisters, Sleuth, the Italian Job, Jaws; the Revenge, Victory, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, the Cider House Rules, Miss Congeniality, Austin Powers in Goldmember, the Prestige, Batman Begins, the Dark Knight, the Muppet Christmas Carol, and the Man Who Would Be King. Caine is one of only two actors to be nominated for an Academy Award for acting (either lead or supporting) in every decade since the 1960; the other is Jack Nicholson. Out of 6 nominations, he’s won 2 Oscars, and has also been honored with four Golden Globes, a BAFTA, a New York Film Critics’ Best Actor Award, and a GQ Man of the Year-Lifetime Achievement Award. Already, in 2008, he has taken home the prize for Outstanding Contribution to Showbusiness at the Variety Club Awards. And now, he has won the title of London’s Favorite Londoner, at last night’s Visit London Awards (sponsored by Virgin Atlantic). Held at the Royal Albert Hall, the ceremony was hosted by 95.8 Capital FM’s Breakfast Show duo Johnny Vaughan and Lisa Snowden and included an address by the Mayor of London Boris Johnson. The Visit London Awards comprise of 14 industry-judged entries, ranging from Large Hotel of the Year to the Sustainable Tourism Award. There are also five People’s Choice categories including Best West End Show and Best Restaurant. London’s Favorite Londoner was a new award for 2008, chosen and voted for by Londoners. Offstage, he goes by Sir Maurice Joseph Micklewhite Jr., CBE. A Chelsea FC fan, the four-eyed thespian has also owned restaurants and written trivia books.
