A Guide To Memorial Day Weekend In Boston

Memorial Day is a day we honor all of our fallen heroes, who died defending our freedom. One of the best ways to reflect on what the day means is to visit the Memorial Flag Day on Boston Common. Starting next Wednesday (May 23), Massachusetts Military Heroes Fund will be planting a Garden of Flags in memory of each Massachusetts service member, who has given their life for our country. Here’s a look at other happenings throughout town this Memorial Day in Boston.

The Massachusetts Military Heroes Fund is again hosting its annual Memorial Day Flag Garden on Boston Common. Each of the more than 37,000 flags planted at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument represents every brave Massachusetts service member who gave his or her life defending our country since the Revolutionary War. The completed garden is always a breathtaking tribute to the true meaning of Memorial Day and a powerful message of support to the families of these fallen heroes that their sacrifices will never be forgotten. A name-reading ceremony to honor all of the Massachusetts service members killed since 9/11/2001 will be held in front of the flag display on the Common next Thursday (May 24) at 10:30 a.m.

72nd Annual Memorial Day Services:

On Saturday, services will be held at the Veterans Memorial Park (often referred to as the Sergeant Charles Andrew MacGillivary Memorial to honor a local hero) in the Back Bay Fens. (The park honors those who fought in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War).

Honor & Tribute: Memorial Day Concert:

On Monday at 6:30 p.m., head over to the North End for the Honor & Tribute: Memorial Day Concert at Christopher Columbus Park. The sunset concert sponsored by the City of Boston Veterans’ Services will feature the Metropolitan Wind Symphony Orchestra.
