This summer, the foodies of Miami can finally have what she’s having as New York City’s world famous Katz’s Delicatessen shares their deli love with Harry’s Pizzeria in the Pass the Pastrami series. This July, a select number of chefs across the country will pass Katz’s signature pastrami meat from restaurant-to-restaurant and offer it in a personalized dish. For Harry’s Pizzeria in Coconut Grove, that means converting the pastrami into a Pastrami Pizza on rye crust with sauerkraut, mustard sauce, and gruyere.
“Katz’s is always my first stop in NYC. THE pastrami is hands down both the best and worst craving to have because you just can’t replicate it,” Chef Michael Schwartz says. “We’re excited to take this classic and have some fun with it in Miami at Harry’s. Pastrami on Rye Pizza just makes sense!”
The Pastrami Pizza Pie will be offered from July 10th to July 16th at a time and price that has yet to be determined. The celebration of Katz’s Delicatessen’s Pastrami meat coincides with the landmark restaurant’s first step into expansion. For 128 years, the historic deli has sat firmly at its Houston Street location in New York. However, in June, Katz’s Delicatessen will open an outpost in Brooklyn at the Dekalb Market. What better way to celebrate passing the torch than by “passing the pastrami”.
“We sell 15,000 pounds of pastrami every week,” Katz’s owner Jake Dell says. “It’s one of our most popular meats and I’ve always enjoyed watching others put their own spin on classics.”
Kicking off the series is Boston-based Chef Jamie Bissonnette. He’ll be serving up his take on the dish for a week before “passing the pastrami” to his friend, Chef Michael Schwartz in Miami, who will then share Katz’s deli experience with Chef Marc Vetri in Philadelphia. Any additional chefs will be announced later this summer.
