Could a New High-End Supermarket Be coming to Southampton?

News | November 3, 2011

Buzz around Southampton indicates there may be a new, high-end supermarket coming to town at the intersection of Hampton and Flying Point Roads.

After Southampton rejected an earlier proposal for a King Kullen, the town could still end up with a new grocery store. According to reports, an agreement has been reached between the owners of a shuttered automobile dealership and a group that hopes to build a reported 20,000 square foot store in it’s place. The old dealership is located at the intersection of Hampton and Flying Point Roads.

Despite what seems to be progress with the agreement, the project still has a few hurdles to clear before construction can begin. First, the building needs a special permit from the village exempting from current zoning rules. Next, the application needs to follow the requisite approval process and get permission from the village’s Planning Board, the Board of Historic Preservation and Architectural Review and the Suffolk County Department of Health Services.

A lawyer involved in the project declined to comment on which high-end store is interested in the lot.
