“We represent more than 200 victims who were injured mentally, physically and psychologically at the Astroworld festival,” Attorney Ben Crump announced at a news conference in Houston.
Attendees of the concert allege they were trampled and crushed when Travis Scott took the stage causing a stampede of fans. In the filed and future suits defendants listed include Scoremore LLC, NRG Park, Harris County Sports & Convention Corporation, and even Drake, who guest performed at the concert.
The lawsuits accuse the organizers of negligence for allowing Scott’s performance to continue despite attendees being trampled. Houston police are still looking into potential criminal charges.
One suit vividly details the scene of panic as concertgoers scrambled to find safety.
“This was against a backdrop of multiple reports of tramplings, patrons losing consciousness, patrons being unable to breath[e] due to profound lack of crowd control, inadequate water, inadequate security and a lack of exit routes,” the suit alleges. “So many people were hurt and so few emergency personnel were provided by defendants, that patrons themselves had to conduct CPR on their fellow concertgoers.”
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner noted 28 Houston Police Department officers and 755 private security guards were on-site at the concert.
“Tragically, due to defendants’ motivation for profit at the expense of concertgoers’ health and safety, and due to their encouragement of violence, at least eight people lost their lives and scores of others were injured at what was supposed to be a night of fun,” Manuel Souza alleges in one of the first suits filed last week.
Scott tweeted on Saturday that he was “absolutely devastated by what took place last night.” He added, “”Houston PD has my total support as they continue to look into the tragic loss of life.”
Police announced A 9-year-old boy remains hospitalized in critical condition, among others with non-life-threatening injuries.
The number of plaintiffs and suits are sure to continue to climb as the dust settles from the tragic event.
