A federal district court approved a $17 million settlement between a university and former students, resolving claims that educational services were not delivered as advertised due to the transition to online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. Judge Robert J. Colville granted final approval of the agreement on Tuesday, with a portion of the settlement allocated to affected alumni.

The lawsuit, representing all students enrolled in in-person courses across the university’s 20 campuses at the onset of the pandemic in March 2020, argued that tuition and fees were paid for an experience that was not provided. Court filings indicate that approximately 96,408 undergraduate and graduate students from the spring 2020 semester were eligible to be included in the settlement.

Under the terms of the agreement, eligible former students may receive up to $5,000 each, with payments distributed via check, Venmo, or PayPal, as specified by the recipients. Additionally, legal fees will account for approximately one-third of the total settlement, amounting to over $5.6 million.

The settlement follows the expansion of the case to include additional former students after a second claim was introduced.
