Khloé Kardashian On Ditching Fad Diets & Parenting About Mental Health

Khloé Kardashian kept fans laughing for 20 seasons of “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” with her upbeat personality and brash sense of humor, but inside, the 37-year-old reality TV star struggled fitting in with her famous family because of her different body type. Despite losing weight in later seasons, Kardashian remained an ally for inclusivity and mental health — two things she currently instills in 3-year-old daughter True and recently discussed in a candid interview.

When launching Good American, Kardashian ensured her clothing brand offered a wide range of sizes. “I always felt excluded from my own family—not by them. On shopping trips, I couldn't shop where they shopped. I'd be indirectly told by brands that their clothes weren't for me because they didn't produce a dress in my size,” Kardashian told Health of her past struggles with body image. “We built Good American always keeping representation and inclusivity at its core.”

After her divorce, Kardashian said she turned to the gym to take care of her emotional health. “At first your body is, like, dying. But emotionally and mentally, the release that I got was worth it,” she said. “I quickly realized how good I feel when I'm consistent with it.”

On top of sweating to release tension, Kardashian opened up about changing her eating habits to better her mental health. “When I was younger and was sad, I would eat—I was an emotional eater. And then I hated the way I felt after that… I had tried every diet under the sun. Remember when Beyoncé did that lemon juice and cayenne pepper thing? I was like, sign me up! That's why I yo-yoed my entire life—I was always chasing some fad,” she said. Now, Kardashians prefers to cut one thing at a time — such as sugar — for about a month instead of looking toward yo-yo diets for results.

Though she notices True — who she shares with NBA player Tristan Thompson — is “really tough,” Kardashian teaches her daughter the importance of handling one’s emotions on a healthy scale: “I do try to always tell her that it's OK if she cries or if something is wrong. When it comes to food—I had so many issues. It wasn't from one person, I guess just from society or how people critiqued my body. So, I don't play when it comes to True. She's very tall. People will always say, ‘She's so big.’ And I'll say, ‘Oh, she's so tall.’ I try to make them be more descriptive. I know what an adult means when they say that, but I don't want her to misinterpret that.”

True will still have a lot to learn on her own, but Kardashian’s effort to ensure her young daughter receives the guidance and reassurance that she missed out on herself is incredible. We’re definitely here for it.
