Breaking Down The NEW Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) Safety Measures With Two Haute Beauty Experts

Not every day do you get not one, but two Haute Beauty experts on Haute Living’s Instagram Live together. Dr. Sachin Shridharani of LUXURGERY and Dr. Daniel Careaga of Careaga Plastic Surgery met online to talk with Haute Beauty Editor Brooke Klaiman about all things haute in the world of cosmetic and non-surgical procedures.

To kick it off, Dr. Shridharani brought up a pressing topic that has been circulating throughout the surgical field, safety. In the state of Florida, where Dr. Careaga's practice resides, there has been a rollout of new safety measures for plastic surgeons to help cut the risk of body contouring surgeries, specifically Brazilian Butt Lifts (BBL).

On the ground in Coral Gables, Florida, Dr. Careaga has seen an influx of patients interested in body contouring procedures. Hey, the beach is just around the corner! With this rise in BBLs, there have unfortunately been patient complications resulting in catastrophic deaths.

When the Health Department caught a glimpse, they took this urgent matter into their hands and began creating new legislation for plastic surgery. A BBL is a fat transfer procedure; the surgeon takes the fat and injects it into the gluteus maximus muscle, which is filled with a plexus of blood vessels. When you are injecting fat directly into a muscle, issues can arise.

"The elephant in the room is that these complications are occurring most commonly at discount clinics that are running two to three operating rooms per surgeon,” said Dr. Careaga.

Now, with the new legislation in place, only 5 BBLs can perform a day. "Avoid the low-cost center. It's expensive to be cheap, and with these situations, you could pay with the cost of your life," warned Dr. Shridharani. Even in the best hands, a BBL takes around 2.5 hr - 3 hrs if you are punctual. Bottom-line, a BBL procedure can't be rushed, and when you are going to a location that is trying to squeeze in as many BBL's a day, these safety measures become questionable.

At Haute Beauty, we are all about the facts. If you are interested in a Brazilian Butt Lift procedure, you can book a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Shridharani or Dr. Careaga today (depending on your location). To learn more about the legislation, details can be found here. To all who tuned into the conversation, we were thrilled to have had you with us while we focused on these important safety measures.
