Are you experiencing hair loss and don't know what to do? Thanks to hair transplants, your "balding" areas can be restored. Undergoing a hair transplant procedure is an exciting time for a patient as they can't wait to have their hair back permanently. As much as hair transplants are forever lasting, just like other procedures, it still requires maintenance. Haute Beauty sat down with Haute Beauty experts to discuss the upkeep of hair transplants. Here's what they had to say:
Dr. Shamila Rawal | Hair Restoration | Wisconsin
In my practice, I prescribe low-level laser light therapy and medications both before and after transplant, to help optimize the scalp growth environment, support native and transplanted hair metabolism, and promote healing of low levels of inflammation present in the scalp.
I perform PRP injections during transplant and then again at 6-months post-transplant, to help boost the building of a strong collagen matrix and hair follicle infrastructure. Since hair loss is progressive, one will always be net losing hair, but we can slow down the rate of this loss with medical and nutritional support. The first two weeks after hair transplant are the most critical and the first month is important to the survival of the grafts. Initially, my patients are instructed to rinse their new grafts gently (wash your hair like a baby by pouring dilute baby shampoo over the head with a cup) and to keep their grafts protected from the sun. In the first month, sun protection remains important as is avoidance of Rogaine (minoxidil), hair products, especially those containing alcohol or friction against the grafts that could dislodge them.
If patients are on Propecia or finasteride orally, I continue that during the healing process. Oral medications like Propecia and spironolactone are great for stabilizing hair, reducing hair loss and helping with the regrowth and can be used during and after the hair transplant process. Patients can use their CapillusPRO caps too after the first month to speed their healing and jumpstart the hair follicles for growth. These products, in addition to Rogaine (we compound our minoxidil adding tretinoin to double the effectiveness and other prescription hair growth factors ), can be used to maximize results.
One of the things I love about SmartGraft and the FUE technology is that we are harvesting hair from the "forever hair" zones - areas that are not affected by age, genetics or stress so the hairs that are transplanted become forever hairs in the new locations. The SmartGraft technology also helps us maximize the health of the grafts so that greater than 95% of the harvested hairs are able to grow successfully in the transplanted locations. This technology is an advancement from older techniques that weren't able to produce the same success rates. We don't have any hairs to waste when patients are dealing with hair loss!
