It's both. In general with Japanese culture, there's a fascination with tips and tricks that you can do to make you live longer or look better.

I do endorse some of these tips because when I present them, I try to look up the evidence behind them. I ask myself: ‘has it been put out there in the research? Has there been anything published about it? Is there evidence behind it?’

HB: How do you apply these tips to your practice?

The thing about my mom's advice that I appreciate so much is that she also goes beyond skincare and just takes care of herself, whether it's through movement or diet.

It just goes to show that it aligned with my approach when I treat patients. I prefer looking at a patient from a holistic standpoint. Yes, there are all these amazing skincare products that you can use but there are some other things that you could be doing in your life that we can adjust that could be contributing to inflammation, aging, stress, diet, sleep, and exercise.

HB: What are your top 3 holistic tricks to combat anti-aging?

4-7-8 Breathing Technique
How to:

Breath in deeply for 4 counts, hold for 7 counts, and breath out for 8 counts.

Explained: Based on pranayama, the practice of breath regulation purportedly helps with anxiety and sleep. There is not much scientific evidence for the specific 4-7-8 technique but there are multiple studies in the literature that show that mindful breathing, decreases stress and that pranayama breathing improves lung function and capacity.

Hugging a tree

One of the most basic human needs is for connection, touching, and hugging. Hugging, in general, has multiple health benefits like:

-Reducing anxiety
-Lowering blood pressure
-Improving heart health
-Increasing oxytocin and thus boosting happiness

The Chi Machine

Invented in Japan, the Chi machine creates figure 8 oscillations with the body that has various effects that are purportedly found to:

-Counteract stress by inducing a state of relaxation
-Promote blood circulation and tissue oxygenation
-Enhance lymphatic drainage
-Relieve vertebra joint pressure
-Temporarily relieves minor muscles and aches

I found a clinical study in patients with lymphedema who used this machine for three weeks and saw a significant reduction in leg volume, fluid retention, as well as, improvement in leg symptoms.
