HB: What is your thyroid and why is it important?

Your thyroid is one of the glands that comprise your endocrine system. It is located in the front of your neck and is shaped like a butterfly. It plays a major role in metabolism, growth, and development of the human body. It helps to regulate many bodily functions and is constantly at work. The Thyroid controls functions such as your metabolism, heart rate, breathing, muscle strength, body temperature, and menstrual cycles

HB: How does your thyroid work?

The first step in this process is that your pituitary gland produces a hormone referred to as TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone). TSH tells your Thyroid to produce your thyroid hormones. The three hormones your Thyroid produce are T3, T4, and Calcitonin. Strictly speaking, T3 and T4 are proper thyroid hormones and are made in the follicular epithelial cells of the thyroid.

These hormones are the main drivers of your metabolism, while calcitonin is made by C-cells and it is involved in calcium and bone metabolism. Your body monitors your T3 levels to know whether or not to produce more TSH. Think of this as a continuous feedback loop. It is constantly monitoring your levels and turning production on and off.

HB: How important is T3 and T4?

T3 and T4 are the hormones that control your basal metabolic rate (BMR). Your BMR is the number of calories your body requires to function while at rest and it is a very important number to know for the management of your health. It is the building block to help you manage your weight. Once you know this number you can then calculate your total calories burned in a day by adding in how many calories you burned that day through activity.

Your body needs a precise amount of T3 and T4. Too much or too little can cause disruptive symptoms and negatively impact your health. Even just a small irregularity in your thyroid hormone levels can interfere with your health and can cause hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism.

HB: What is Hyperthyroidism?

Hyperthyroidism happens when your thyroid gland makes more thyroid hormones than your body needs. When your thyroid levels are too high this can lead to the following issues:

  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Restlessness and nervous energy
  • Insomnia
  • Increased hunger
  • Increased sensitivity to warm temperatures
  • Excessive sweating
  • Infrequent, light periods
  • Hair loss
  • Anxiety and irritability

HB: What is Hypothyroidism?

Hypothyroidism happens when your thyroid gland makes too little thyroid hormone. When your thyroid levels are too low you might experience the following issues:

  • Weight gain or trouble losing weight
  • Tiredness or fatigue
  • Disturbed sleep patterns
  • Dry skin and hair
  • Sensitivity to cold
  • Frequent heavy periods
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Reduced concentration
  • Depression

HB: How can you analyze your Thyroid Health?

Once you have decided to get your thyroid levels checked, you should look for a medical provider and ask them to run a hormone blood panel that includes TSH, Free T3, and Free T4. Those tests should give you a good picture of your thyroid health and whether your levels are suboptimal.
