HB: What is VASER liposuction?

VASER Ultra High Definition Abdominal Liposuction (VUHDAL) is a relatively new plastic surgery procedure.  VASER is an acronym and stands for Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance.  The VASER uses ultrasound energy to shatter and melt fat cells permanently.  During VUHDAL, abdominal fat is melted, and the two rectus abdominis (six-pack) muscles are exposed.  Vertical and horizontal abdominal muscle contour lines are delineated and accentuated with the VASER.  During your private consultation with Dr. Katzen, you and he will discuss your wishes and thoroughly review your health history.   Usually, depending on your overall health and anatomy, your dreams can be achieved.

Over the years, many men and women have presented to Dr. Katzen seeking a flatter abdomen.  Most men want a flat belly with a highly visible six-pack.  However, women are complicated.  Some women want a slim, flat feminine tummy, whereas some women want the single, vertical midline line (linea alba).  Some women wish to see the three vertical lines (linea alba and semi-lunaris). HB: How does the treatment work?

VUHDAL is performed under general anesthesia with a board-certified medical doctor -- an anesthesiologist.  Once you are completely asleep, your abdomen is prepped with an antiseptic and sterilely draped.  VUHDAL is a three-step procedure: injection of tumescent fluid, application of the VASER, and liposuction.  The proposed incisions are anesthetized with a local anesthetic.  There are three incisions for the VUHDAL.  Two incisions are hidden under the bikini line, and one incision is placed in the belly button.  All incisions are about the size of a pencil eraser.   A solution of numbing medication (lidocaine) is combined with medication to minimize bleeding (epinephrine). This solution is called a tumescent solution and is injected throughout the abdomen.

The tumescent solution creates the perfect aquatic medium for the VASER.  Next, skin ports are placed to prevent thermal and friction burns from the VASER probe.  The VASER probe is inserted through the port sites.  The VASER is turned on and applied throughout the abdomen.

Contrary to traditional liposuction, the VASER is unique in that the VASER melts fat and heats the undersurface of the skin.  There are three layers to the abdomen: the upper layer under the skin (deep dermis), the middle layer of fat and connective tissue, and the deep layer of fascia, which covers the muscle. When the VASER touches the upper layer or undersurface of the skin, it is heated and forced to contract.  When the VASER touches fat, the fat cells' walls are shattered, and the fat is melted.  When the VASER, reaches the muscle fascia, the fat around the muscle is carefully sculpted and permanently dissolved.  The VASER is preferentially applied to areas that need more fat removed, or lines accentuated.

Once the VASER is passed through all the tissue planes, the VASER probe is removed. A liposuction cannula is inserted.  A liposuction cannula is similar to a stainless steel surgical straw.  The liposuction cannula is passed through these tissue planes, and the melted VASER is permanently removed.  Smaller liposuction cannulas are used to target other pockets of fat throughout the abdomen.  The liposuction cannulae and skin ports are removed. Usually, the liposuction port sites are closed with sutures.  You are wiped clean and dry and placed in a garment.

VUHDAL takes about two to three hours to complete.  You are expected to wear your garment for six weeks.  After six weeks, if you continue to have swelling, you should continue to wear your garment.

• When can I return to a very active job? - Within 2-3 weeks.
• When is all the swelling gone? - Within 6-8 weeks.
• How long will I have pain? - Within 1-2 weeks.

• How long do the drains stay in? - For about 3-5 days.
• When can I start to exercise? - In the upper body, around 4-6 weeks. In the lower body: 1-2 weeks.
• When can I have intercourse? - One week after surgery.
• Do I need to do massages?  -Yes.
• What kind of massages do I need? - Lymphatic massages.
• When do I start massages? - In about 2-3 weeks after surgery.
• How frequently should I receive massages?  - 2-3 times a week.
• How long should I continue massages? - For 3-4 weeks.
