How The Selfie Generation Is Changing The Industry of Plastic Surgery

Blame it on the rise of social media influencers or the pop culture phenomenon that are the Kardashians if you want, but social media has revolutionized almost every industry and the field of plastic surgery is no exception. There are certain picturesque looks people are trying to achieve based on what social media platforms like Instagram have deemed beautiful and if you add in the popularity of filters people are using to alter their appearance, individuals are now able to control exactly what features they accentuate or fix through editing apps easily accessed at the comfort of one's fingertips.

According to Dr. Jeffrey Jumaily, a plastic surgery based in the heart of Beverly Hills, the trend of filters has definitely impacted the way people see themselves and the 'flaws' they wish to correct.

"Filters can drastically change the skin, the glow, the contours and highlights of the face and people use these filters to their advantage." Dr. Jumaily said. "The results are dramatically better photos compared to the natural lighting when the photos were taken."

The effects social media has had on the field of plastic surgery is almost like a double-edged sword in that cosmetic treatments have become more common and less stigmatized but more and more people are scrutinizing almost every angle and inch of their face and bodies.

"The downside is that people get accustomed to this enhanced picture that the actual natural appearance may become harder to live with," he said.

Common procedures often requested by patients deal with the improvement of contouring their jaw, cheeks, forehead and nose. For Dr. Jumaily, he specifies some of these procedures -- specifically nose-related ones -- are different for each patient depending on age, ethnicity and personal preference.

"I want to create a nose that flows with the contours of the face and does not interrupt the natural lines. The key is a balanced nose [since] a beautiful nose is not noticeable," he said.

Focusing on a variety of approaches and techniques, Dr. Jumaily tailors each procedure to the patient's individual needs and goals. His relationship with his patients starts the moment the patient books a consultation.

In the era of social media, more and more patients can now see the pre and post-op stages of what a rhinoplasty procedure will entail thus he focuses on examining the breathing and detailed-options of how the nose will look ensuring each patient is happy with the result.
