I am a third-generation Los Angeleno so I have cars in my blood and on my brain. I grew up going to (and sometimes racing at) San Fernando Valley Raceway and Lyons Drag Strip (Long Beach) as well as Ascot Park (the dirt track in Torrance). I drove anything that I could get the keys to (and some which I figured out how to hot-wire – all with the owners’ permission, of course). When I was at Palisades High School (Pacific Palisades – West Los Angeles), I wrote the “Car of the Week” column (1964-1965). Some weeks I wrote about my friends’ cars but other times I was able to talk local dealers out of giving me a car for a few hours. (Talk about a different time in the world!) And what dealers cooperated? How about a GTO, an Olds 442, a Buick GS and more? I also got to drive (with the rep) a Mustang GT350 at the Shelby headquarters near LA Airport and was able to interview the owners of other unusual cars, like the Chrysler turbine car. I even met and wrote about Craig Breedlove, who had just broken the land-speed record at Bonneville in his “Spirit of America”. Fun times. Flash forward a few (several?) decades and I now work as an attorney with a specialty in representing family offices. Many of my clients (and friends and other contacts) have amazing car collections and I occasionally get to drive some of their cars, especially when I help a client buy something special. For example, in the last few years, I have driven most of the superfast models made by Bugatti (a few times!), Mercedes, Bentley, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, BMW and more. I have participated in track days (I have met many dealers) with Bugatti, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Bentley and Cadillac (I had a CTS-V for almost a week). I will write about those cars in future posts. As a member of the Checkered Flag 200 (the main support group of The Petersen Automotive Museum), I participate in events about a dozen times a year. We organize or attend car shows, rallys, garage tours and more. It’s a great group of people. I also am into motorcycles (I have had a slew of Triumph Bonnevilles and currently have a 1979 T140E, which I’ve owned for over 30 years) and a BMW R11RS sports-touring bike. I am a self-trained mechanic who and I worked as a boat mechanic before going to college. I probably have put between 50,000 and 75,000 miles on motorcycles and intend to ride for many more years.

Driving The Dream: Gotham Dream Car Tour in Los Angeles

Here’s the proposition – take maybe, oh, 2,500 horsepower, divide it into six supercars that list for a total of around $1.5 million and invite people to play King For A Day for several hours around that auto enthusiast’s playground known as Southern California – places and roads like “Malibu”, “Santa Monica”, “Pacific Palisades”, “Pacific […]

Haute Auto of the Week: Jaguar F-Type

Did you know that Jaguar wasn’t always “Jaguar”? It began life in the early 1920s as the Swallow Sidecar Company, building sidehacks for motorcycles and then, in the 1930s, it began building cars, like the SS90 and SS100, so named because they were “Standard-Swallow” models. However, the company’s “SS” designations didn’t set well after World […]

Haute Auto of the Week: Audi R8 V-10 Plus Coupe

R8? Undoubtedly a ground-breaking and game-changing car when it was introduced in 2006. Mid-engine V-8, great looking, plenty of power (in the low 400s), terrific handling – what more could you want? “More horses”, said some, to which Audi replied with a powerplant provided by its Italian cousin, Lamborghini, a V-10 with 525 prancers. “Almost […]

Rapid luxury in a stylish new package: 2013 Bentley Flying Spur

These days, there are many Bentleys to choose from. There’s the GT, a hardtop or convertible, most of which are available in several flavors (V-8s, W-12s, Speed models plus the new LeMans editions). At the other end of the price spectrum, there’s the Mulsanne (which also has a LeMans variant). But what if you want […]

Haute Auto of the Week: Lamborghini Gallardo, Commando Lambo

What is it about Lamborghinis? They thrill the senses, what with their angular masculinity and their amazing song. They certainly don’t look like anything else on the road. How do that do that, year after year, making such fresh statements? The Gallardo (the “entry-level Lambo”) is a really interesting car. Named after a famous breed […]

Haute Auto: 4 Horses for the Apocalypse

Let’s get one thing straight – whenever someone writes about the “best” or the “top”, such as the world’s best motorcycles, readers offer comments like “You forgot the 1951 Zündapp KS601 Green Elephant”. Well, don’t get your leathers in a twist – this article is about four of the most-interesting, and in many ways revolutionary, […]

Haute Auto: The 2013 Jaguar F-Type The Newest Jaguar On The Prowl

Did you know that Jaguar wasn’t always “Jaguar”?  It began life in the early 1920s as the Swallow Sidecar Company, building sidehacks for motorcycles and then, in the 1930s, it began building cars, like the  SS90 and SS100, so named because they were “Standard-Swallow” models.  However, the company’s “SS” designations didn’t set well after World […]

Haute Auto: Lamborghini’s Cinquantesimo

Happy 50th Birthday, Lamborghini. My, how you’ve grown, from an upstart founded by a tractor manufacturer to one the world’s greatest supercar constructors.  And to think that it all started with Ferruccio Lamborghini’s dissatisfaction with how he was treated by Enzo Ferrari when he sought a better clutch for his Ferrari — yep, Ferruccio owned […]
