Tim Lappen

I am a third-generation Los Angeleno so I have cars in my blood and on my brain. I grew up going to (and sometimes racing at) San Fernando Valley Raceway and Lyons Drag Strip (Long Beach) as well as Ascot Park (the dirt track in Torrance). I drove anything that I could get the keys to (and some which I figured out how to hot-wire – all with the owners’ permission, of course). When I was at Palisades High School (Pacific Palisades – West Los Angeles), I wrote the “Car of the Week” column (1964-1965). Some weeks I wrote about my friends’ cars but other times I was able to talk local dealers out of giving me a car for a few hours. (Talk about a different time in the world!) And what dealers cooperated? How about a GTO, an Olds 442, a Buick GS and more? I also got to drive (with the rep) a Mustang GT350 at the Shelby headquarters near LA Airport and was able to interview the owners of other unusual cars, like the Chrysler turbine car. I even met and wrote about Craig Breedlove, who had just broken the land-speed record at Bonneville in his “Spirit of America”. Fun times. Flash forward a few (several?) decades and I now work as an attorney with a specialty in representing family offices. Many of my clients (and friends and other contacts) have amazing car collections and I occasionally get to drive some of their cars, especially when I help a client buy something special. For example, in the last few years, I have driven most of the superfast models made by Bugatti (a few times!), Mercedes, Bentley, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, BMW and more. I have participated in track days (I have met many dealers) with Bugatti, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Bentley and Cadillac (I had a CTS-V for almost a week). I will write about those cars in future posts. As a member of the Checkered Flag 200 (the main support group of The Petersen Automotive Museum), I participate in events about a dozen times a year. We organize or attend car shows, rallys, garage tours and more. It’s a great group of people. I also am into motorcycles (I have had a slew of Triumph Bonnevilles and currently have a 1979 T140E, which I’ve owned for over 30 years) and a BMW R11RS sports-touring bike. I am a self-trained mechanic who and I worked as a boat mechanic before going to college. I probably have put between 50,000 and 75,000 miles on motorcycles and intend to ride for many more years.

Haute Auto: Ferrari 288 GTO Evoluzione

David is one of the few people who often drives his other 288 GTO (who else can say that!) on the street – in fact, he takes all of the horses in his corral out to play, including several 1960s-vintage classics, such as 250 Lusso, 275 GTB short nose 6C and a 330 GTS – but the “Evo” is too radical for road use as it is at a whole new level – 650 HP in a race-ready carbon-fiber wisp of a car that clocks in at under 2,100 pounds, abut the same as a Smart Fortwo with a supermodel at the wheel.

Winged Rapidity: The McLaren 650S

WHEN MCLAREN ANNOUNCED THEIR MP4 12C, people were stunned by its beauty and performance yet baffled by the name, which hardly tumbled off the tongue.

The Rolls-Royce Wraith Offers Elegance at Speed

Since it was founded some 110 years ago, Rolls-Royce has been known as the creator of elegance on wheels. Rollers were famous for their civility, aplomb, comfort, style—they had that air of a certain je ne sais quoi, sometimes difficult to describe but always a joy to experience (a quiet joy, to be sure, but a true joy nonetheless).

The Pagani Huayra 2014 Drives like Poetry in Motion

1955. Argentina. Horacio Pagani is born. This sounds like the start of some fable or apocryphal story about someone who really turned things around, right? I mean, the name “Horatio” features prominently in American folklore. And did I mention the part about this Horatio building an F3 racecar when he was 20 and about his time working with Lamborghini? And Ferrari? And on tractors and pick-up trucks? And then founding his own constructor, Pagani Automobili Modena, in 1992?

Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse is a Mythical Beast

The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse is, to car enthusiasts worldwide, the equivalent of a unicorn. It’s whispered about in circles of gearheads, when talk turns to extreme horsepower, incredible torque, unbelievable speed… to many, it’s a mythical vehicle that they’ve heard about, perhaps seen pictures of, but haven’t seen in the flesh.

Red Bull Global Rallycross is A High-Octane Caffeinated Battleground

The top two winners of their heats advance. Basically, other than a few wild-card slots in the finale, it’s lose and go home, win and go on. Repeat. That, my friend, is the Red Bull Global Rallycross Championship (“GRC”).

Aston Martin Vanquish Volante: An Elegant Drop-Top With A Powerful Punch

I’m always interested in what a car’s name means.  Look up “volante” in the dictionary, and depending on what language it’s from, you’ll get a few choices, including “flying,” “steering wheel,” and even, “moving with light rapidity.” However, when you couple “volante” with “Aston Martin Vanquish”, all definitions lead to “pure joy on the road.” […]

Haute Auto of the Week: Infiniti Q50S Hybrid

“It’s not fair! I wait all my life for a shot in the spotlight and I have to follow a Ferrari!” Being prone to anthropomorphisms, all I could think about during my first few minutes behind the wheel of the new Infiniti Q50S Hybrid was that it was not going to be happy following on […]
