True Detective
There were many restaurant openings and one sad closing that was announced in L.A. this week, plus cool casting news regarding HBO’s “It” show, True Detective and a fabulous partnership between Trump National and Terranea that is sure to keep even the most jaded golf aficionado happy. Without further ado, here is our week in review.
Rob Floyd
Rob Floyd is a man who knows his libations. Floyd has been an influencer on the mixologist scene since 1989, designing cocktails for the Emmy’s, Grammy’s and Oscar’s. After running the bar at Chateau Marmont for eight years, he then joined the opening team of the SLS Hotel to focus on The Bazaar by Jose Andres, before heading to the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood to act as lead at the Library Bar. This led him to his current home, Santa Monica’s members-only club 41 Ocean, as National Director of Mixology. Along with being one LA’s top men behind a bar, he is currently on a national radio show with Chef Jamie Gwen, composing new creations and sharing tips with listeners. Floyd also created a popular educational tasting series “Cocktail Theatre,” a cocktail show, described as “The History Channel meets The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” performed throughout the country, to sold-out crowds in Vegas, with tickets selling out months in advance. Once a month 41 Ocean relinquishes its members-only rule, offering “Cocktail Theatre” a select crew of revelers. Trust us though, it’s a hard experience to describe: you have to live it to believe it (if you think we’re joking, just ask the scantily dressed male fairy walking around the club, though he may, in all likelihood, just grunt at you). We sat down with Floyd to pick his brain about the best libations in LA, the City of Angels thriving mixology scene and his baby, Cocktail Theatre.
Alexs Lemonade
The haute chefs of Los Angeles came out in droves to support Alex’s Lemonade Stand and serve up some haute cuisine at the fifth annual L.A. Loves Alex’s Lemonade extravaganza over the weekend.
rag and bone
Venice’s Abbot Kinney, “The coolest street in America” has one more too-cool-for-school addition: Rag & Bone’s third L.A. boutique.
Howard Murad
Once upon a time (a few weeks ago, to be honest) our skin was in disrepair. We tried everything in our medicine cabinet to fix our clogged pores, but nothing seemed to work. Desperately, we made a last ditch effort with Murad’s Hydrating Toner, which we were initially suspicious of. What did it do? Would it work? Who cared—we needed help. It was the smartest thing we could have done, without even knowing why. In days, our skin healed, but we were perplexed as to why, and so turned to the man himself—Dr. Howard Murad—for answers.
Joe Perry
Joe Perry is one of the greats. Aerosmith’s lead guitarist has been rocking for over 40 years, and naturally, his storied career has had its share of highs and lows. He’s finally sharing his story—(a lack of sex), drugs, rock n’ roll and his tumultuous relationship with band member Steven Tyler— in his long-awaited book Rocks: My Life in and Out of Aerosmith, which is slated to hit shelves on October 7th. We chatted with the iconic musician, now 64, about his past, his present, his future and living on the edge.
Afternoon Tea
It’s tea time! Here are the top spots to enjoy Earl Grey, champagne clotted Devonshire cream and scones galore in Los Angeles.
Heritage Auctions
This week Heritage Auctions will host an uber-exclusive auction featuring a number of extremely exclusive, super-luxurious pieces, including an Hermès Extraordinary Collection 30cm Diamond Matte Himalayan Nilo Crocodile Birkin Bag, a Louis Vuitton Motorcycle Helmet and a rare diamond and white gold Chanel bracelet. To kick off the sale—jewelry on Sept. 22 and other luxury accessories on Sept. 23—Rochelle Gores Fredston co-hosted an intimate preview and cocktail party at Soho House on Sept. 19. Here, the founder of PSLA and chair of the Autumn Party, picks the pieces you need to get your hands on at this week’s auction.
Langham Huntington
The Langham Huntington Hotel is a little slice of luxury in Pasadena that, to us, felt like the ultimate secret escape. Given that the supremely elegant resort celebrated its 100th anniversary this year, we’re not surprised that others fell in love with it as much as we did.
