Just because Magic Johnson has long since retired from the NBA doesn’t mean he’s living life on the sidelines. This week he appeared on the “Lopez Tonight” show to talk about his $700 million chain of businesses. He currently owns “urban” versions of Starbucks in inner cities, explaining that he replaced typical Starbucks music with “soft R&B, Earth, Wind and Fire, Temptations, Marvin Gaye.”

California native Mary McDonald got her start in the design field as a milliner, crafting elegant hats displayed in Vogue, Bazaar, and Vanity Fair. These days the L.A.-based McDonald is one of the most celebrated interior designers, featured in Town & Country, Veranda, House & Garden, International Vogue, and not to mention a regular on House Beautiful’s Top 100 Designer’s list.

Award show fashions are always the cause of some serious style debates. The world waits with bated breath to see their favorite stars appear on the carpet clad in top designs—some of which have been custom made for that particular evening. In lieu of this fashion-themed Haute Living edition, I realized that the San Francisco Opera Opening and Opera Ball were the perfect opportunities to kill two birds with one stone—I can cover both luxury events (my usual column) and style.all, fashion without events is like a girl all dressed up and nowhere to show! What better occasion for ladies to dress up in their best gowns than at the Opera Ball?
