However, he has styled the exteriors and overseen the interiors of yachts measuring less than 100 feet, too. In fact, one of his latest projects is well under the 100-foot mark, yet should capture no less attention. The VanderArk 47 Sport Trawler marks the first model in a new boat brand. In addition, and equally important, she’s a fresher approach to the traditionally conservative lines and performance of long-range cruisers.

If you’re like most yachtsmen, your heart melts upon the site of a classic, all-wood runabout. Maybe you already own one, or perhaps you have one on your ultimate wish list. Either way, an auction being held in Minnesota in October will no doubt be of interest to you. Indeed, from the 15th to the 16th in the town of Winsted, not far from Minneapolis, 100 vintage wood runabouts will be offered — all at no reserve.

It’s not every day that a crew member gets to christen a yacht. Then again, it’s not every day that a yacht like Cakewalk is launched.

Measuring 281 feet and displacing nearly 3,000 gross tons, Cakewalk, built by Derecktor Shipyards, is the largest American-built yacht in terms of length in more than 70 years. Equally significant, it’s largest ever built stateside in terms of volume. Cakewalk slipped into the water on August 8 at Derecktor’s shipyard in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

When Palmer Johnson began building sleek, sporty yachts instead of the traditional-looking megayachts it had been delivering for decades, jaws dropped—and not in a good way. People within the yachting industry were shocked at the radically different style, and many couldn’t envision steady demand for it.

Bearing a rich-green hull, Sea Owl slowly made her way from one of Burger Boat Company’s build sheds and into the waters of Lake Michigan in July.

The 142-footer was commissioned by an American family that has previous cruising experience, aboard yachts bearing the same name. However, this Sea Owl represents their largest yacht to date. In fact, the prior Sea Owl, built in 1999 (and which they’re presently selling, for $10.5 million), measures 124 feet.

Sunreef Yachts is still quite young in comparison to other yacht builders worldwide, dating only to 2000. But what it lacks in age, it has made up for in volume, counting more than 50 catamaran deliveries—power and sail—worldwide.
