‘A Story of Islamic Embroidery’ at Gallery One in the Emirates Palace
There are still a few weeks left to go see ‘A Story of Islamic Embroidery’ at Gallery One in the Emirates Palace. The exhibition tells the tale of the trade of silks and majestic textiles traveling across the Silk Road. More than 200 rare textiles including a important embroideries from Central Asia are exhibited for the first time allowing the visitor to experience the exchange of culture and art from the 17th to 20th century.
These beautiful works full of abstract shapes and patterns and vibrant colors also refer to the role of women who created the majority of these culturally charged and artistic patterns. The stories told come from the steppes of Central Asia, the harems of Morocco, and the lands of Persia. Patterns are regal and majestic and turn any ordinary bedspread into an exquisite and elaborate decoration.
The exhibition walks visitors through a range of decorative objects and embroidered garments and shows how such a tradition was maintained by rural, urban and nomadic women who carried it across foreign lands and cultural identities.
