Burberry’s Summer 2027 Show Was a Love Letter to Imperfection
Burberry's Summer 2027 collection features a Celia Birtwell collaboration, Central Cee's runway debut, and a David Bowie soundtrack.
The Burberry Summer 2027 collection is, in Chief Creative Officer Daniel Lee’s own words, “a return to the basis of things.” Running through nearly every look is a collaboration with Celia Birtwell, the British textile artist whose hand-drawn prints defined the look of the 1960s and ’70s, working alongside Ossie Clark and serving as a muse to David Hockney along the way. Where Burberry’s design language typically leans graphic, Birtwell’s drawings introduce something looser: the House Check resolves into gingham, then into a simple stripe, while faces and florals disrupt the house’s more traditional codes.

“You can really feel the human hand in it,” Lee said of the collaboration. “In the check, in the lines.” That philosophy carries through the construction itself, washed silk and cotton give the womenswear a worn-in, already-loved quality, menswear cuts run shorter and more relaxed, and the equestrian-inspired Derby bag arrives with hand-finished florals, while the Sloane bag is rendered tactile through woven leather. “Nothing is overly pressed or pristine,” Lee said. “There’s an intentional imperfection: the idea of owning a piece, living in it.”

The rest of the collection builds out that same instinct. Rainwear leans toward lightness, with trenches in silk faille and taffeta ruched into parachute-like volume, while a new matelassé technique quilts two layers of soft leather into a puckered, seersucker-like effect. Trompe l’œil detailing, belts, epaulets, and cargo pockets show up rendered in bullion embroidery across coats, dresses, and skirts, and the palette leans genuinely joyful: orange, pink, and yellow pastels set against apple green, cobalt, and azure blue, grounded by cellar grey, pale calico, and berry brown.

The show itself returned Burberry to Chelsea College of Arts, part of the University of the Arts London, for the third time, first hosting the brand’s Spring/Summer 2010 show, Burberry’s London Fashion Week homecoming after several seasons in Milan. The venue carries a personal thread too: Thomas Burberry’s granddaughter once studied there, learning commercial window dressing. The partnership now extends beyond a single show, with Burberry and UAL developing student-focused initiatives for emerging creative talent through the coming academic year.

Casting brought its own headline. Rapper Central Cee, who has amassed more than 10 billion Spotify streams (the first UK rapper to hit that mark) and became the most decorated artist in MOBO Awards history in 2026 with eight wins, made his runway debut for Summer 2027 after attending the brand’s Summer 2026 show as a guest. The soundtrack, curated by longtime Burberry collaborator Benji B, drew entirely from David Bowie’s catalog, spanning “Abdulmajid,” “Weeping Wall,” “Subterraneans,” “Lazarus,” and “Ashes to Ashes,” a choice Lee described as capturing “the humanity in the experiment… a feeling of instinct amid the control.”

Burberry didn't dress up Summer 2027, it deliberately roughed it up, Celia Birtwell's hand-drawn joy loosening the house's usual graphic precision, Central Cee stepping from the front row onto the runway itself, David Bowie scoring the whole thing. Daniel Lee called it a return to instinct over control. On the evidence of this show, instinct is winning.
