Prada’s New Collection is Built Entirely Around a Single Garment: The Skirt

Milan Fashion Week has officially started. For Spring/Summer 2027, Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons didn’t design a collection so much as an interrogation. The entire womenswear show is organized around a single, fixed variable, the skirt, treated as the one constant the designers allow themselves, then pushed through as many forms as the idea can hold. It’s less a theme than a constraint, and Prada uses it the way the house always has: as a frame that makes the ideas inside it sharper, not smaller.

The skirt’s silhouette itself stays linear and modernist throughout, but everything happening on top of it breaks conventional fashion logic. Velcro appears in contrasting colors as the actual foundation for crystal embroidery, a genuinely unlikely pairing of hardware-store fastening and jewel-level embellishment that still functions exactly as Velcro should, allowing pieces to be reshaped, revealed, or concealed on the body. Metal snap fasteners are magnified and jeweled. Crinoline, normally an invisible structural layer, gets pulled out into the open, doubling as decoration in one look and protective shell in another.

Material itself gets reassigned throughout the collection. Industrial fabrications, ciré matt, Re-Nylon, are worked into plissé pleating they were never intended for, while cotton is treated to read as leather or suede. Elsewhere, crystal recreates the texture of guipure lace, turning what could be a simple embellished skirt into something closer to jewelry. Modest floral prints, meanwhile, show up rendered in cotton and synthetics, an intentionally quieter counterpoint to the collection’s more architectural moments. One pleated skirt extends beyond the body entirely, its excess fabric held in the hand and shifted with movement, turning a garment into a gesture.

The skirts don’t exist in isolation, either. Prada builds in deliberate friction between pieces, a skirt abstracted into a fragment, then read differently depending on what it’s paired with: a sweater, a shirt, a bra top, each changing what the skirt itself seems to mean. It’s the collection’s real thesis, stated plainly in the show notes: there’s real beauty in surveying something completely familiar and asking how many forms it can actually take.
